Water Damage Prevention, Inside and Out | SERVPRO of Geauga County

3/25/2024 (Permalink)

water and moisture damaged ceiling next to roof window When you find water damage in your home, call SERVPRO of Geauga County to help restore your space to preloss conditions!

Water damage is one of the top ways that homes are damaged across the nation. It can come into your home fast and furious from a flood, or drip silently into your walls and floors from a hole the size of a pinhead in one of your pipes.

There is no doubt that we require a great deal of water to run our lives. We want water to be on demand, but when it tries to take over, it can be devastating to our homes and our lives. The good news is that we can take quite a few steps to keep our homes prepared for water Mother Nature or anything else brings.

Prepared on the Outside

In order to stay safe from floods, heavy rains and other storms, we need to prepare the outside of our homes. Stopping water before it can ever do damage is the best way to prevent the need for costly repairs, and your yard can be a great first line of defense.

Rain and floodwater need to be encouraged to move away from your house as quickly as possible, so make sure your yard has a slight slope. If you have a particular area of your yard that consistently stays wet, consider adding organic material that will help with water absorption. Gardens are another great way to ensure water stays out of your home.

Along with your yard, your gutter system is another great line of defense against water damage. Your gutters do a lot for your home from the top down by preventing water damage to your roof and your basement. Help them out by keeping them clear of debris.

Every fall and spring, spend time cleaning out leaves, sticks and anything else that could cause a blockage. During the winter, make sure ice dams don’t form by clearing excess snow and icicles off of your roof.

Prepared on the Inside

Just like some simple maintenance on the outside of your home can go a long way in preventing water damage, taking some action inside your home is a great way to avoid needing costly repairs.

Check window, door and basement sealing at least twice a year to ensure water can’t seep in through cracks. While some simple caulking can keep your windows and doors safe, you may need to have your basement professionally sealed if you start noticing visible cracks. Consider adding a sump pump to your basement as well. This will pull water out before you are left with a flood.

Check under sinks and around tubs and toilets weekly to catch drips and potential leaks before damage sets in. This might seem excessive, but a single leak can drip several gallons of water in a day, leaving your walls and floors susceptible to structural damage and mold growth. Even splashes coming from a shower or tub can cause damage over time.

Make sure your water lines are well-sealed and you have long enough shower curtains to keep water off of the floor. Check under your refrigerator, washing machine and dishwasher, too—leaks like to hide out long-term under these large appliances. Replace worn-out seals or water lines that are showing signs of wear and tear to prevent damage later.

Preventing water damage should be part of your regular home maintenance, inside and out. Keep your home safe and dry with these simple steps.

Enjoying your hot tub?

8/29/2022 (Permalink)

rubber duck It is important to follow all safety precautions when owning a hot tub!

Whether it’s warm or cold outside, a hot tub can be relaxing and therapeutic at the end of a long day.

Although soaking in the tub might melt away your worries, you shouldn’t neglect the insurance implications and dangers of owning one while following all safety precautions.

Should you have the unfortunate event of having your hot tub cause water damage to your home, we recommend calling SERVPRO of Geauga County to help you get your home repaired and restored as efficiently as possible.  The actions below are some things you can do while waiting for assistance:

  • Shut off the water source if possible
  • Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the home when access to the power distribution panel is safe from electrical shock
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting
  • Move any upholstery or valuables
  • Don’t enter affected areas if electrical outlets, switches, circuit breakers or electrical equipment are exposed to water. Always avoid electrical shock hazards!

It is important to note that hot tubs are generally covered by your homeowner’s insurance, but we do recommend contacting your insurance agent as some policies may not. If your insurance carrier agrees to cover your hot tub, there’ll likely be some changes to your liability coverage.

Regardless, we know decompressing is essential in today’s busy world, and a hot tub is a great way to do this, but please be sure to follow all the  guidelines surrounding your hot tub.

leaky facuet Don't ignore that drip!

It may be easy to ignore, but a leaky faucet is something you shouldn’t ignore. It can waste over 30 gallons of water over the course of a year and ignoring this will cause your monthly water bills to skyrocket! It can also easily result in mold developing around the faucets and inside your home.  Lastly, it is always an indication of an underlying problem.  If left alone for too long, the entire plumbing system could become compromised, leading to worse water damage and more costly repairs down the line.

1. Shut Off the Water Valves - these are found underneath the sink

2. Call your Plumber  - they will identify the leak, repair or replace leaking lines or fittings.

3. Contact your insurance carrier - Know what your insurance policy says before talking to your agent. It is important to read your policy to make sure your loss is covered. Sometimes, the repair may not be covered, but the water from the leak resulting in additional damage may be.

Prepare now to stay safe during winter storms

1/13/2022 (Permalink)

frozen pipe Follow our tips to prevent pipes from freezing.

According to the Red Cross each year, hundreds of Americans are injured or killed by exposure to cold, vehicle accidents on wintry roads, and fires caused by the improper use of heaters. Prepare now so you can stay safe during blizzards and other winter storms!

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.

Pipes that freeze most frequently are:

  • Pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, and water sprinkler lines.
  • Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
  • Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.

How to Protect Pipes From Freezing:

Before the onset of cold weather, you can do a few things to protect your pipes from freezing by following these recommendations:

  • Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer's or installer's directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines unless directed. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.
  • Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors.
  • Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
  • Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold-water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
  • Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes.

If your home or business experiences frozen or burst pipes call us immediately: 440-564-7266 or visit http://www.SERVPROgeaugacounty.com

Are you familiar with the three stages of water damage?

12/10/2021 (Permalink)

house with water damage As a locally owned and operated business, SERVPRO of Geauga County is close by and ready to respond to your flood or water damage emergency.

There are three categories of water damage and in the unfortunate event that your home or business suffers from water damage it is best to identify the type of water you are dealing with.

CATEGORY 1:  CLEAN WATER DAMAGE

Category 1 is the least severe and includes water damage such as broken pipes, broken water supply lines, or broken appliances such as a dishwasher overflowing.  Typically, these situations can be remedied easily, and the water involved in this is sewage and toxin-free.

CATEGORY 2:  GREY WATER DAMAGE

This type of water damage involves water from appliances such as toilets or washing machines.  It is best to avoid coming in contact with this water; but it may or may not be harmful to humans.  It is important to disinfect your home or business completely if you encounter this type of water damage.

CATEGORY 3:  BLACK WATER DAMAGE

Black water is the most extreme type of damage as it includes sewage and flood water.  This is a serious matter and needs to be addressed quickly and efficiently to minimize secondary damage.

Protecting Your Home From Water Damage This Winter

10/26/2021 (Permalink)

According to Cleveland.com “water damage is the number one winter peril and the basis for homeowner’s insurance claims”.

Unfortunately, a burst pipe can cause more than $5,000 in damage to a home!

Michael Bowdren, owner of SERVPRO Geauga County says “the number one problem homeowners face in the winter is that they do not turn off their main water supply when they go on vacation.  Pipes break and freeze and unfortunately they come home to a disaster.”

Here are some basic tips on how to prepare your home:

  • Protect and insulate your pipes in all areas of your home.
  • Know where your water main shutoff is located. As we mentioned above, when traveling during the cold months for an extended period of time, we highly recommend shutting off your water main.
  • Maintain appliances. Appliances are the most common cause of in-home water damage, primarily your washing machine and refrigerator hoses.
  • Investigate and repair any leak as soon as possible.
  • Check your water pressure…no one likes a weak shower, but if the pressure is set too high, pipes and hoses may fail under pressure.

SERVPRO of Geauga County specializes in the cleanup and restoration of commercial and residential property after a water damage event. Our staff is highly trained in property damage restoration. From initial and ongoing training at SERVPRO’s corporate training facility to regular IICRC-industry certification, rest assured our staff is equipped with the knowledge to restore your property.

Water Invasion in Geauga County!!

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage is one of the most common forms of damage that occurs in homes and commercial buildings. Excess water in home or water in business can be due to floods or rain as well as internal problems including supply line break or pipe break, leaking fixtures, or even roof leaks. The extent of water damage in a flooded home or business can be difficult to determine as much of the water or moisture can get absorbed into porous materials around the property.

It is often tempting to try and clean yourself when you have water in your home or business, but it is better to call a mitigation company. Mitigation professionals have the skills, understand the problem, and have state-of-the-art equipment to handle the cleanup and drying.

Mitigation professionals have the resources and ability to determine where the water is coming from, also known as the source of loss. After the source of the water damage is found, the water in home or water in business situation can be handled properly. A malfunctioning appliance or fixture can be turned off. A pipe break or supply line break can be blocked or shut off.

Next, the Mitigation professionals begin water extraction using either their industrial portable or truck mounted extraction pumps. Water detection technology enables them to determine saturation levels and identify areas. This enables them to use specialized equipment to dry out the space and dehumidify the area.

After the structure and its contents have dried out, including drywall, insulation, wood beams, the next step is to apply a good disinfectant in the area. Professional-strength disinfectant is used on all areas affected by the water in home, water in business or flood waters including wood and walls and non-upholstered furniture.

This is only a part of what SERVPRO of Geauga County provides during a water / flood situation. To learn more, please visit us at: http://www.SERVPROgeaugacounty.com or call us at: 440-564-7266.

Water Damage Professionals in Chagrin Falls

4/14/2021 (Permalink)

Before entering a home affected by water damage, make sure the electrical power is shut off. Exposed wires or plugged-in devices can electrocute people, resulting in major injury or even death. To protect against airborne contaminants, wear protective clothing from head to toe, including a vapor respirator, rubber gloves and eye protection. Also, wear thick boots that can withstand puncturing.

Professional restoration services can quickly identify what items in the home are compromised by water damage. Normally, anything that is porous may need to be discarded if it has been in contact with contaminated fluids. Items such as mattresses, box springs, pillows, particle board, carpet, padding can trap more moisture more than other materials and foster the growth of microbes.

Once professionals arrive at the building, they will be able to track down any pockets of excess moisture and remove them
. Certified technicians can locate moisture by using equipment that measures the moisture behind tile and other materials that may not feel wet on the outside. If moisture is detected, the technicians will expose that area in order to start the drying process. Equipment will be placed, and moisture reading will be documented. Any debris will be removed and disposed of, to prevent further damage.

It’s important for a family to hire professionals that are certified through a reputable organization. SERVPRO of Geauga County specializes in the cleanup and restoration of residential and commercial property after a fire, smoke, or water damage event. Frozen Pipes in Chagrin Falls?

1/13/2021 (Permalink)

Burst pipe due to freezing. This line was frozen, expanded, and then burst. This created over $15000.00 in damages for a local Geauga County resident.

Some would agree, winter here in Geauga County has been pretty, mild. However, forecasters are expecting a drop in temperature next week. They say we will be going from mid-30’s and even 40’s, to temperatures below average. Such fluctuation in temperature, can cause pipes to freeze and break. The frozen pipe expands and splits which then allows the water to escape under pressure. If not found right away the water can create significant damage to your property. After discovery, turn off the water, contact a plumber, and call SERVPRO of Geauga County.  As a note, make sure to keep the busted water / pipeline (most insurance companies need to see the source of loss) This also helps the insurance company determine that this was caused by frozen pipelines verse age rot, damage etc. Most insurance companies will cover damage from a frozen pipe, provided the home or business was occupied and the heat was on.

SERVPRO of Geauga County provides emergency cleaning and restoration services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—including all holidays.

Water Damage and Your Safety

There are many choices of professionals who remedy water damage in the Bainbridge, Chagrin Falls, Novelty, Russell, and Chardon Oh area. How To Prevent Water Damage

How To Prevent Water Damage

As a homeowner, you want to avoid major complications to your property. In fact, there are some things that may seem hard to prevent, but there are actions you could take to save you a major headache. For example, water in home crawl spaces and materials is hazardous, requiring prompt attention and potentially creating water damage. Finding it, though, can seem tricky as it often begins in minute and seemingly innocent stages. You can take actions to locate water leaks early. To try to avoid this complication, consider the following three tips.

1. Inspect It

Being proactive is important. As a homeowner, be on the lookout for any of the following:

  • Clogged gutter
  • Broken pipe
  • Ruined shingle
  • Weak caulking
  • Running toilet
  • Dripping faucet

For larger projects, set aside time every few months to evaluate the locations, ensuring that they are in proper condition. As for the everyday fixtures, try to stay alert. Note any changes in pressure or function, and, if you see any signs of a leak, call a plumber.

2. Dry It

When your child spills a drink, it is important to wipe it up right away. Drips are just as important. They are tiny; over time, however, water in home carpet and drywall accumulates, sucking in the moisture like a sponge. This is hazardous as it attracts fungus and ruins materials. Focus on removing the humidity quickly. Consider running dehumidifiers and exhaust vents.

3. Fix It

As soon as possible, fix any plumbing issues. During a pipe cleanup, you'll want to attend to the initial break and the consequences of it. For example, don't throw down towels and wait a few days, thinking the liquid won't cause any harm. The moisture can seep into carpet, grout and drywall; therefore, what seems harmless actually can be quite detrimental. The wetness sits and could potentially create a musty odor, mold and rot. Contact a water remediation company in Chardon, OH, to test the area and begin appropriate restoration services.
When things break, don't push them off until tomorrow. Water in home materials is problematic. Instead, be alert, keep it clean and repair it.

10/28/2019 (Permalink)

Dark humid basement Recovering from a basement flood can be done with the right equipment and a lot of hard work

Many homeowners have heard horror stories of sump pumps failing and basements filling with floodwater. A basement flood can happen quickly and cause a lot of damage in a short amount of time. If your basement in Highland Heights, OH has experienced flooding or water damage, your insurance coverage may include the cost of professional restoration services. There are some things you can do yourself, but if damage is severe or you do not have the necessary skills and equipment, professional assistance can help. Here are a few tips on how to safely restore your basement.

Stay Aware of Danger

Keep safety first. When entering a flooded area, watch out for these common dangers caused by a basement flood:

  • Slippery, slimy floors
  • Items you cannot see through the floodwater
  • Electrical outlets exposed to water or submerged

Anytime there is water in a home, there is the risk of electrocution. Be sure that the electricity is turned off before entering the area. If the water has gone above the electrical outlets and you cannot safely reach the fusebox, the only way to ensure your safety is to have the house taken off the electric grid by a professional.

Dry Out the Area

Once you have ensured your safety, the next step is to begin removing the water. If you can do this without entering the flooded area, even better. A shop vacuum can be used to suck out the majority of the water. Once the water is gone, you are likely to find that flooring, baseboards, and possibly drywall have been soaked by the water. Everything that was underwater may need to be removed and replaced.
Recovering from a basement flood can be done with the right equipment and a lot of hard work. If you discover that you need professional help, water restoration experts can restore your basement to its pre-flood condition, as if it never happened.

4 Steps To Complete Before the Insurance Adjuster Arrives

6/12/2019 (Permalink)

If your home has suffered from water damage, prepare for the home adjuster

How to Prepare for the Adjuster if Your Home Has Suffered from Water Damage

If your home has suffered from water damage, take the following steps to prepare for the home adjuster. When you complete these steps before the insurance adjuster arrives, the damage on your property can be repaired or corrected as soon as possible. Speed up the process by getting as much paperwork out of the way as possible:

  • Proof of loss forms
  • Insurance policy reports
  • Estimates from authorized professionals

In addition to tackling paperwork, be sure to complete the next steps as quickly as possible.

One: Contact Your Insurance Provider

It's vital that your insurance company can contact you, especially if you have had to evacuate your home. Have your policy number, phone number, property address, and alternate phone numbers handy. If it's possible to meet the adjuster at your home, you may find it easier to communicate clearly.

Two: Secure Your Property

Before the adjuster arrives, and before you evacuate if it is possible to do so safely, protect your property. Be aware that water damage can affect the construction of your home, leaving it unsafe to re-enter the building. When this is the case, contact a water damage repair and remediation professional to provide these services.

Three: Take Pictures of Damages

You will be completing a lot of paperwork regarding the damages throughout your home but taking photographs or a video is a good way to provide proof of your claims. Remember not to remove any items until the home adjuster has provided an okay.

Four: Keep Information Organized

Put together a safe place to store contact information, insurance claim reference numbers, receipts, photographs, and every other document regarding the damaged property and repairs. This will also include checks from the insurance company. You may expect up to three separate checks: structure damage payment, personal belongings loss reimbursement, and money for additional living expenses.

When water damages have affected your Mayfield, OH, home, work closely with the home adjuster to resolve the issue. Work through these four steps and maintain open communication for the best results.

3 Steps To Take After a Broken Pipe Strikes

4/15/2019 (Permalink)

Act quickly when you have a bursting pipe just to prevent further water damage.

Although as a building manager or property owner you try to take steps to protect your commercial building from bursting pipes, extenuating circumstances sometimes mean you have to deal with water damage after extreme cold weather or significant storms hit Mayfield, OH. Being prepared for such events and knowing what to do can help you act quickly and prevent secondary damage.

1. Turn Off the Flow of Water

Removing the source of the flowing water is the first step to take when dealing with broken pipes and the resulting flooding. If your building has a supply line switch, use it to turn the water off to the affected area instead of the entire building. You should also turn off any electricity running to the damaged area to prevent electrical shocks.

2. Remove the Standing Liquid

Once the water is off, if the puddled liquid is in a small area, begin removing the standing water immediately. If the bursting pipes flooded a large area, contact a water cleanup and restoration service to clean the area and make necessary repairs. The professionals also have the knowledge to fix a broken pipe and check for any mold, rotting building materials, and other secondary water damage in Mayfield, OH.

3. Read Your Insurance Policy

Before contacting your insurance company, take time to read the policy and make sure your building has flood damage coverage. Sometimes the broken pipe repair may not be covered, but the resulting water damage and secondary problems may be, so it is best to know what your insurance policy says before talking to your agent.

Bursting pipes can occur in any commercial building, and when they do happen to yours, you can act quickly to prevent further water damage by following the above three steps. You can also plan ahead by choosing a water cleanup team and getting onto their emergency client list.

Four Steps to Take When Filing a Water Damage Claim

3/13/2019 (Permalink)

Always get in contact with your insurance agent

Water Damage Claim

Experiencing water damage in your Chardon, OH home can be a stressful situation. Filing an insurance claim can add to the frustration you are feeling if you are unprepared. Following these steps can make the process go more easily for you.

1. Call Your Insurance Agent

The first thing that you should do is relocate to a safe area if the damage to your home is significant. After this, call your insurance agent. Getting in touch with your insurance company as soon as possible will allow the process to be started more quickly. It also prevents the company from denying your claim because you waited too long to report the damage.

2. Take Pictures of the Damage

Before you begin moving anything, you should take pictures. This will help during the insurance claim process because you will be able to show your agent the extent of the damage to your home. Be sure to include photos of the structure of your home as well as any damaged property and belongings.

3. Take Steps to Prevent Further Damage

If there is a flood of water in your home, your insurance company will expect you to take care of your house and do what you can to reduce any further damage. If they find that you have not done so, it may affect your claim.

4. Make a List of Lost Items

In order to file your insurance claim and be properly reimbursed, you will need to supply your insurance agent with a list of items that have been damaged. A professional remediation service can help in this area by determining which items can be salvaged and which must be replaced.

Whether a pipe burst in your home or the water damage has come from another source, it is important that you begin the claims process right away. Waiting too long can add unnecessary complications and might result in a lower amount of financial compensation.

A Running Shower and an Overflowing Toilet Indicate a Severe Sewer Blockage

1/17/2019 (Permalink)

If your toilet overflow caused a significant flood, consider bringing in flood restoration experts

You just discovered that your morning shower caused a toilet overflow downstairs. This overflow indicates that you have a severe plumbing problem and have several concerns:

  1. You face a messy sewage cleaning job.
  2. The sewer blockage is below the level of the toilet.
  3. Other drains may be affected.

You may Be Able to Clear the Clogged Pipe Yourself

Before attempting to clear the pipe, it is essential to perform an initial cleanup of the overflowed sewer water. That is the most dangerous category of water and disinfecting the entire area is recommended. Gloves and a mask are also essential.

If the obstruction is in your house, there is an excellent chance that you can clear the clogged pipe yourself. However, a blockage outside your home will likely require the services of a plumber or even your Department of Public Works.

Determine the location of the blockage by checking the other drains in your home. If any pipes are open, the clog is likely in your home. Unfortunately, the tests may cause more water to back up into the toilet and require additional sewage cleaning. You should take this into account while cleaning the overflow area.

The Plumbing Auger Is the Tool of Choice for Clearing Blocked Drains

An auger is a long thin coiled wire with a flared tip. You insert it into the toilet as far as it goes. If it encounters the blockage, a twisting and back-and-forth motion and running water will remove the clog. If you don’t own and can’t borrow an auger, someone in the plumbing department of a Chagrin Falls, OH, hardware store can help you find the right one.

If your toilet overflow caused a significant flood, consider bringing in flood restoration experts with their specialized equipment and expertise to perform your sewage cleaning. When they are finished treating your home, it will be “Like it Never Even Happened”.

Does Drain Cleaner Damage Pipes?

12/18/2018 (Permalink)

Clogged drain in a Chardon,OH home

Chemical drain cleaners can be effective for clearing a clogged drain, but these substances may merely move blockages or damage pipes. Find out more about the risks of common chemical cleaning formulas.

The Type of Pipe

Chemical products may be more or less damaging depending on the formula and pipe material. Drain cleaner may:

  • Damage older metal pipes
  • Soften PVC pipes
  • Adversely affect any pipes if used improperly

These products are very powerful and toxic. Gentler and safer enzymatic treatments can clear partial blockages within 24 hours.

The Type of Clog

A fully clogged drain calls for a mechanical, rather than chemical, cleaning method. There are several reasons why chemicals will not work on a drain that is completely blocked:

  • Cleaning products may not dissolve a total blockage
  • Chemicals may sit in pipes and cause damage
  • An auger or snake can penetrate and extract or break up clogs

A homeowner should factor in the type of pipe and clog to choose the best drain clearing solution. If you choose to use chemicals, select a formula that is relatively safe for the pipes in your home and follow the instructions.

The Type of Cleaner

It is important to consider how cleaners work. There are several major types of chemical drain cleaners:

  • Caustic cleaners, such as sodium hydroxide, give electrons to the clog and release heat
  • Oxidizing cleaners containing sodium hypochlorite oxidize the clog and release electrons, heat, and gas
  • Acidic cleaners, such as sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, attract electrons and release heat

Every chemical cleaner can degrade pipes. Look for the most effective and least damaging solution for the pipes in your home.

Chemical drain cleaner may be temporarily effective, but these formulas may simply move a clog further down the drain. If a clogged drain results in a toilet overflow or backup, contact a sewage cleaning service in Chardon, OH.

Prevent Secondary Damage After a Pipe Breaks – Here's How

10/11/2018 (Permalink)

Leaking pipe into ceiling in Chardon, OH

Secondary water damage refers to the type of damage that occurs while the initial damage sits and/or is being cleaned up. Typically, this type of damage is far more destructive than the initial damage as it usually results in mold, structural rot and other hazardous conditions. Secondary damage can also occur after the mess from, say, bursting pipes or a flood, has already been remediated. This only happens when remediation efforts are not thorough and performed by a non-professional. You can prevent secondary damage by taking the following measures after an incident involving water:

  • Inspect your home for broken pipes and perform fixes where necessary.
  • Make sure rooms prone to moisture have proper ventilation.
  • Clean up any sitting water as soon as you discover it.
  • If an incident does occur, contact a Chardon, OH, water remediation team right away for proper cleanup assistance.

By taking these measures, you can protect your home and your wallet from the consequences of secondary damage.

Dealing With Broken or Burst Pipes

Bursting pipes are one of the most common causes of secondary water damage, especially when the damage occurs when the homeowners are away on vacation. Burst pipes spew out a lot of water and can affect areas beyond what a person can visibly see. When homeowners attempt to clean up the mess on their own, they typically only clean up the immediately affected area. Oftentimes, however, water seeps into the floorboards, the drywall and under appliances, areas that all require attention as well. If you discover a leak, fix the broken pipe. If you're going away on vacation, insulate the pipes. These simple measures can go a long way to preventing damage.

Most people assume that once the initial mess caused by bursting pipes is cleaned up, the danger is gone. That is often not the case. Unless your home was cleaned and dried out by a professional water remediation company, the risk of secondary damage remains.

Answers to Your Questions About Flooding and Insurance Coverage

8/21/2018 (Permalink)

Drying mats on wood floor in a Chardon, OH church

When your Chardon, OH, home is affected by water damage because of a flood or a broken pipe, one of your first concerns may be whether the insurance will cover this situation. Most homeowner's insurance doesn't cover the actual broken pipe or the price you'll pay to fix the broken pipe, but it may cover most of the water damage.

Why Aren't Broken Pipes Covered?

Most of the time, insurance companies expect homeowners to be responsible for routine maintenance. This means you are responsible for repairing leaky pipes and replacing any broken pipes. If you want to have coverage for flooding due to pipe breaks, you'll need to have an all-perils policy, and coverage for a flood from storms and other rising water will require another specific insurance policy.

Why Was My Flood Claim Denied?

If your pipes burst because of a situation that could have been prevented, the insurance company will probably deny the claim. Part of your responsibility as a homeowner is to protect pipes from freezing or becoming weakened by rust. Any claim that results from homeowner negligence is likely to be denied.

What Does My Insurance Coverage Include?

If your claim is not denied, you might expect your policy to cover damages to carpeting, drywall, peeling paint, and the professional services needed to remove all water, dry out your furnishings and home, and prevent mold growth. Check with your insurance provider for specific coverage details.

How Can I Prevent Further Flooding?

Some of the best ways to avoid broken pipes are to invest in routine professional plumbing inspections and to conduct your own visual inspections, looking for older pipes, signs of rust and clogs, and exposed pipes in places where freezing might occur. Make sure you know where your water shutoff valve is located and make sure it is in working condition.

Don't wait until you have a flood to learn the answers to these questions. Plan ahead to avoid costly repairs and be sure you have appropriate insurance coverage.

Stop a Kitchen Sink Leak From Becoming Bleak in 3 Steps

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

Kitchen Leak can be prevented by ensuring the leak is fixed quickly, reducing damage.

Spotting a leak underneath the kitchen sink is a pivotal first step in remedying the problem. Flooding can be prevented by being vigilant and taking action early in the leak’s life. Following these three straightforward steps, you can avoid a worse situation by being prepared and quick to start the process.

1. Shut Off the Water

Below the kitchen sink where the leaky pipe is, there are valves on the pipes near the faucet that control water flow. One is for hot water, and the other is for cold water. You should start by turning the valve attached to the noticeably leaking pipe. If it does not stop the leaking, then turn the other shutoff valve.

If you cannot locate any valves by the defective pipe or the leaking doesn’t stop, go to your home’s main valve and turn that off. This will shut down all water at your residence, so it is advised to do this only in emergencies or right before you receive scheduled kitchen repair.

2. Contact Insurance

Next, your home insurance should be contacted to check what coverage is offered. An insurance adjuster will come to your home and inspect the leak. The adjuster will examine if the problem could’ve been prevented and then decide if you are liable for the flooding. The insurance will cover the repair if no negligence is discovered.

3. Finding a Professional

Water damage is risky to leave unattended. While it may seem easy to clean up with just a mop or towel, any lingering water can cause damage to wood cabinets around the sink or the floor in the area. The help of a team experienced in the removal of water in home settings is beneficial to reversing any problems the leaky sink caused.

The three-step process starts your journey at mitigation and finishes at restoration. A leaky kitchen sink can be easily stopped from flooding or excessively damaging your home in Chardon, OH. All it takes is knowing what to do.

4 Ways To Protect Your Pipes From Freezing

4/8/2018 (Permalink)

Ceiling Pipe Break

Frozen temperatures can sneak up on you. To complicate matters, when you own a commercial property in Burton, OH, it is possible that you are not always present. This means you cannot always make sure that little things, such as leaving a faucet dripping or keeping cabinets open, are done to avoid frozen pipes. Fortunately, there are other ways you can safeguard your large pipes from freezing.

1. Automated Heating Control

Setting the thermostat at an automated range that others cannot override manually can prevent you from having to hire water restoration specialists to do costly water line repair later. Keeping your heater running when the weather is below freezing, even if there is no one present, is a simple way to protect your pipes.

2. Sealant on Holes and Cracks

Another way to avoid frozen pipes is to keep warm air inside and cold air outside. Inspect your interior and exterior walls for any cracks or holes that are letting heat escape. Block the cold drafts by sealing the fissures that allow them passage.

3. Heating Tape

Heating tape can be applied directly to pipes, ensuring that they stay at a temperature above freezing. Unless pipes are exposed, it is a good idea to use self-regulating tape so that it does not overheat. Follow manufacturers’ instructions carefully to avoid turning tape into a fire hazard.

4. Extra Insulation

Adding extra insulation to the walls and ceilings of your property in Burton, OH, can keep your pipes from bursting. You can also fit your pipes with fiberglass or rubber sleeves to provide an extra barrier to the cold directly to the pipes. If your building seems to lose heat easily, this may be the best option.

Protecting the pipes in your commercial building can save you time and money. By taking a few extra precautions, you are more likely to avoid frozen pipes and the expensive repairs that come with them.

How To Care for Water-Damaged Items After a Flood

3/27/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Home and Content

Flooding in your Burton, OH, home can happen for many reasons. Water in the home may be the result of a burst water pipe, a leaky sink or toilet, or a flood caused by nature. No matter the reason, water can seriously damage precious keepsakes, documents and other important items that you cannot replace. If you find yourself with waterlogged photo albums, toys or other important keepsakes after a flood, there are a few ways you can try to salvage them.

Gathering Items After a Flood

Flood waters can have a different affect on a variety of items. However, there are a few valuables that require special attention:

" Artwork
" Paper documents
" Photo albums

If a broken pipe caused one room to flood and you know the water is not contaminated with sewage or dangerous chemicals, you can carefully gather these items from the water and start dry cleaning them indoors in an area with low humidity and away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can cause paper documents and artwork to fade or curl.

Determining Condition

You may not be able to salvage everything after a flood, but once water in your home recedes, taking stock of what remains can help you determine what is worth keeping. If some items have mud or silt on them, wash it away carefully with a low-pressure hose and set the items indoors to dry. A storm cleanup and restoration company can advise you on whether some objects affected by black water can be properly sanitized.

Handling Items With Severe Damage

If books, photos or other fragile items are badly damaged, they might require special care. Try to air dry these items as much as possible, and then store them in plastic airtight cases until you can contact a paper goods restoration specialist.

When water in a home damages precious items, the effects can be devastating. However, knowing how to react and handle these items in case of a flood in your Burton, OH, can help you act quickly and allow you to salvage as much as you can.

The level of concern you should feel after a flood inside your home depends on what type of water has appeared. There is white water, which is plain, clean water with little to no contaminants. You should be able to tell when water is contaminated based on the color and odor, and you should never attempt a DIY fix without professional guidance. Contact professionals in Highland Heights, OH who know how to safely handle water damage caused by grey or black water.

Grey Water

Grey water refers to liquids that come out from pipes and other structures that does not contain human waste. This water may contain:

• Fats
• Oils
• Soap particles
• Hair

While this does result in a certain amount of contamination, it is not as severe as it could be, and there is less of a risk of people in the vicinity suffering from health problems caused by exposure. If your household uses natural, biodegradable soaps free or boron, chlorine and sodium, then you will have even less to fear. However, if left untreated, this type of water can slowly grow worse.

Black Water

Water damage from black water is a severe health problem that needs to be addressed immediately. When flooding occurs due to a blockage in the sewer system, drains in your house will bring up water contaminated by fecal matter and pathogens. A professional team will need to be brought in to safely remove the waste and the affected drywall.

When you discover water backing up into your home, you need to take prompt action to handle it right away to curtail a disaster. If you cannot tell where the water came from or if it has darkened in color even in the slightest, then you should avoid touching it, because you could end up hurting yourself. Instead, leave water damage remediation in Highland Heights, OH to the professionals.

During water damage or flood damage, a common tendency is to pick and keep away things. Do note that wet materials tend to be really heavy.

The mitigation after flood damage requires removal of excess water. This is done by mopping and blotting. The water damage restoration requires excess water from wooden furniture being removed. This has to be done after removing lamps and any other tabletop items.

For drying after water in the home, remove and prop up the wet upholstery including cushions.

The mitigation measures after flood damage will require the placing of aluminum foil or wooden blocks below furniture legs. Wet carpets require air movement to dry. Water damage restoration will require air movement to dry wet things faster.

They will make a further mess up during water cleanup.

Water in business or water in the home cannot be removed by household vacuum. During flood damage, never use television or any other electronic appliances. They should be used only after water cleanup has been done.

Often they believe it is something that happens to people who live in flood-prone areas, or places known to be afflicted by severe storms. However, this is often not the case; damage in a home or business occurs for a great many reasons. When it happens, time is of the essence because attending to water in the home or business in three days or less prevents the growth of poisonous mold.

Aside from large-scale weather-related disasters, there are several common causes of water damaging a home or business. • Broken pipes or hoses • Overflowing bathtubs or toilets • Sewer backup • Extended periods of high humidity in the basement Some of these problems are easy to prevent with careful maintenance. Other occurrences that lead to damage are completely out of a home or business owner’s hands. • Power outages causing water removal pump failure • Damage caused while attending to a fire • Flash floods, those located in Ohio who are living in the vicinity of the Chagrin River know how something as simple as a spring thaw can cause excessive flood damage rather rapidly.

When faced with water causing damage in a home or business, the first thing to remember is to call for help immediately. Waiting to seek help while trying to remedy the situation will only make the damage worse. Persons faced with water damage need the assistance of professionals who act right away and use cutting-edge gear and methods to remove the water rapidly.

There are many choices of professionals who remedy water damage in the Bainbridge, Chagrin Falls, and Chardon Oh area. Here are a few tips to help find the right company to help. • 24/7 availability, time matters when water destruction occurs so constant availability is important. • Highly trained professionals who understand the facets of air movement, drying, and water cleanup. Certification from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) provides the peace of mind that the restoration company will provide quality work from knowledgeable technicians. Whether it is water in the home or water in the business, having a technician who is skilled in mitigation is important; this is no time for amateurs to try their skills. • A restoration company which is licensed, insured, and bonded for the protection of the client and the restoration professional. • Good customer reviews are helpful, but time is of the essence so it is best to have the number of a highly regarded professional before damage has occurred. Once the water restoration professionals are on the way, there are still things the home or business owner can do to start the water cleanup process. Before considering doing any tasks, be sure the home or business is safe.

The primary concerns when thinking about safety are electrical hazards and the possibility of slipping and falling. Also, use caution when lifting wet materials; they are quite heavy and often difficult to move.

After determining the safety of the home or business, here are a few things which will help facilitate mitigation. • Mop and/or blot excess water • Remove loose items from the floor • Remove art objects or other irreplaceable items • Place wood blocks or aluminum foil between furniture legs and wet carpet • Prop up wet upholstery and furniture cushions • Remove rugs from wet carpeting • Turn on the air conditioner to help with air movement and drying There are also several things not to do after a home or business sustains damage from water. • Do not leave wet fabrics in place • Do not use a household vacuum to try and remove water; attempting this is extremely dangerous and even potentially fatal. • Do not use household appliances • Do not use televisions • Do not enter areas with sagging ceilings • Do not turn on ceiling fans or ceiling light fixtures if the ceiling appears to be wet • Do not allow rugs or any other colored items on carpeting Caring for your important contents is particularly important when there is water in the business or home.

A good restoration company can help customers with the overwhelming task of repairing and reclaiming valuables. This is especially crucial when the process involves critical documents or irreplaceable photos which sustained damage. It is important to remember that some damage can be so extensive that restoring the documents is impossible.

However, there are several techniques to speak with your restoration specialist about when documents or photographs incurred damaged. Placing your documents or photographs is your restoration specialists' hands greatly increases the chances that these can be salvaged. • Dehumidification • Air Dry • Freezer Dry • Vacuum Thermal Dry • Vacuum Freeze Dry Occasionally, it is necessary to remove all residents and possessions from a home or business which has sustained damage.

If this should happen it is important to have a restoration company which is prepared to help with organizing, packing, and moving the belongings. There are several reasons that a complete move out is a good idea in situations which require extensive repair and restoration. • Avoid potential exposure to mold • Protecting surviving items from possible damage • A faster remodeling process • Protecting contents from causing damage to the home or business • Increasing the safety of all people who live or work in the damaged location • Providing peace of mind that everything is as safe as possible and under the care of professionals.

Mold is something to be particularly cautious around. Because things like mold and mildew can enter your home quickly, take care to avoid contact with any mold. Any items in the home or business which can soak up liquids have the potential to contain mold. No one expects to have flood damage touch their homes or their businesses. Unforeseen disasters, accidents, and carelessness can occur and wreak havoc on people's lives and possessions. If you live in Ohio, especially the areas in and around Bainbridge, Chagrin Falls, or Chardon, OH. there are qualified professionals available to help.
