Protecting Your Home From Water Damage This Winter

According to Cleveland.com “water damage is the number one winter peril and the basis for homeowner’s insurance claims”.
Unfortunately, a burst pipe can cause more than $5,000 in damage to a home!
Michael Bowdren, owner of SERVPRO Geauga County says “the number one problem homeowners face in the winter is that they do not turn off their main water supply when they go on vacation. Pipes break and freeze and unfortunately they come home to a disaster.”
Here are some basic tips on how to prepare your home:
- Protect and insulate your pipes in all areas of your home.
- Know where your water main shutoff is located. As we mentioned above, when traveling during the cold months for an extended period of time, we highly recommend shutting off your water main.
- Maintain appliances. Appliances are the most common cause of in-home water damage, primarily your washing machine and refrigerator hoses.
- Investigate and repair any leak as soon as possible.
- Check your water pressure…no one likes a weak shower, but if the pressure is set too high, pipes and hoses may fail under pressure.
