Plan and Protect Your House From Fire | SERVPRO of Geauga County

11/1/2024 (Permalink)

Domestic smoke alarm / battery powered smoke detector on the ceiling in room filled with smoke from fire at home When the smoke clears from your home, call SERVPRO of Geauga County to help restore your family’s home faster!

Our homes are our sanctuaries and our safe places. We want to know that when we are home we can let our guards down and find complete rest. The last thing we want to think about is the homes we love going up in flames.

House fires are very common, though, and when you are unprepared for the possibility of fire, it can end in a major tragedy. Thankfully, it doesn’t take a lot to get prepared. With a plan and some protective action, you can get back to relaxing in your little piece of heaven.

Plan

Did you know that when a fire begins to spread through your home, you may have less than two minutes to get out before all routes become blocked? Fires move fast, which means every member of your family needs to know how to safely and quickly get out on their own, or with as little help as possible.

Create a plan with your entire family, and practice it regularly. Your plan should include an evacuation route from every room of your home.

Challenge your kids to find the safest and fastest way out of their bedrooms by setting a timer and letting them race it out. Choose a safe location for everyone to meet outside of your home. Play with the kids at this spot so that it becomes a comfortable and common place for them to go.

Make sure you talk with the kids about alternate routes like windows if they can’t get out of a doorway. They need to know how to unlock and open them on their own if they are old enough, but they also need to understand the dangers involved so they don’t have an accident. Windows should be a last resort exit only.

Practice your plan monthly. When you do, use your smoke detectors to start your evacuation plan. It is important for your family to know what they sound like to help lower the fear factor and ensure they can respond appropriately if a disaster strikes.

Protect

A plan is crucial for your families safety because fires can happen completely out of the blue and can move so quickly. When you know your family can get themselves to a safe place during a fire, it can bring you a lot of peace, but you shouldn’t stop there. Take steps to protect your home from fire, too.

Put enough smoke detectors in your home to alert your family wherever they are. You should have one on every level of your home and outside of every sleeping area. Check them monthly, too—only working smoke alarms save life.

A lot of protection comes from simply staying close to potential risks. That means staying in the kitchen when you cook, staying in the room when you use a space heater, and blowing candles out when you walk away from them or switching to flameless candles only. The more you can add fire safety to your thinking, the safer you can keep your home.

Make a plan and add protection to your daily lives. You can rest easy knowing your sanctuary is safe.

Love Enjoying a Fire Pit?

7/13/2022 (Permalink)

chairs around a fire pit Be sure to follow important fire safety tips if you have a fire pit.

We are in the height of summer and in Geauga County fire pits have become a great way to enjoy the outdoors and relax with your friends and family.

They are also a relatively inexpensive way to enhance your outdoor space and come in a variety of types and range from elaborate to quite simple. If you are lucky enough to have a fire pit, we would like to share with the following tips our local Fire Department posted to keep in mind when it comes time to use your fire pit:

  • The fire pit or approved container must be at least 15 feet away from any structure or combustible surface that can catch fire. This minimal distance is per national, state and local fire code requirements for open burning in approved containers.
  • Avoid windy conditions that can blow hot embers onto combustible surfaces. It’s possible that conditions in Ohio could prompt burn bans depending on dry weather conditions.
  • Remove leaves and other combustible materials around the pit to ensure the fire doesn’t accidentally spread.
  • Always have a container of water nearby and a garden hose on standby before starting the fire.
  • Do not use lighter fluid, kerosene or gasoline to start a fire because of the risks of severe burn injuries. Instead, place a crumpled piece of paper or cardboard or a store-bought fire starter and cover with kindling.
  • Keep children and pets a minimum of three feet from the open burn.
  • Extinguish a fire by spreading the ashes over a large surface area to cool. Then, pour water over them to make sure they are completely extinguished ashes can re-ignite.
  • If you have a fire that escapes your fire pit and moves into a nearby pile of kindling or a combustible surface, call 9-1-1 immediately.
  • Check your home insurance policy to ensure that you’re properly covered when using an approved outdoor fire container.
  • Permanent outdoor fireplaces can present zoning issues if there are existing deed restrictions and/or property set back requirements which restrict any type of structure constructed.
  • Keep in mind that outdoor fire containers can produce smoke pollutants, which can be a health hazard to you and your neighbors. They can also produce smoke scares during night- time hours, if the source of the smoke is not readily apparent. These calls are treated as potential fires, committing firefighters and equipment until the source of the smoke is identified.

Firework Safety in Geauga County

7/1/2022 (Permalink)

fireworks Be safe with fireworks this holiday!

In just a few days, most of us will be enjoying Fourth of July festivities and fireworks. Firefighters want you to remember how easily they can cause house fires or wildfires. One of their biggest reminders - don't use any fireworks anywhere where the landscape is extremely dry.  Here are some additional safety reminders:

  • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit—hot enough to melt some metals.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy, in case of fire or other mishap.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then move quickly away from the fireworks device.
  • Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water and throw them away.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Move to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
  • Never point or throw fireworks (including sparklers) at anyone.
  • After fireworks complete their burning, to prevent a trash fire, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding the device.
  • Make sure fireworks are legal in your area, and only purchase and set off fireworks that are labeled for consumer (not professional) use.
  • Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Spontaneous combustion - Fact or Fiction?

6/1/2022 (Permalink)

rags and fire damage Evidence of a fire due to spontaneous combustion as a result of oil soaked rags left in a garage.

Spontaneous combustion or spontaneous ignition, as it is often called, is the occurrence of fire without the application of an external heat source.

Due to chemical, biological, or physical processes, combustible materials self-heat to a temperature high enough for ignition to occur

Rags and towels soaked with oils, including cooking oils; hot laundry left in piles; large compost, mulch, manure, and leaf piles; and moist baled hay can spontaneously combust in the right conditions. Avoid this type of fire by following a few simple and proven tips:

  • Store piles of hay, compost, mulch, manure, and leaves away from buildings, in case a fire occurs, and keep the piles small to allow for the circulation of air and the dissipation of heat.
  • Any business using large quantities of oily rags should dispose of those rags in an OSHA-approved container to await pickup by an industrial cleaning company.
  • If you're working on a project at home, spread the soiled rags in a single layer on concrete to prevent the buildup of heat and allow the rags to become hard and brittle. Place the rags out of direct sunlight and secure the corners to prevent movement by wind.
  • Hay should be completely dry before baling and moving to a storage facility. Ensure that the facility is well ventilated.
  • Dial 911 or your local fire emergency number if your hay bales or mulch, leaf, manure, or compost pile is emitting smoke. The combustible material will need to be spread out to dissipate the rising heat, but the introduction of oxygen can result in an immediate fire. Firefighters should be standing by onsite.

In the unfortunate event should you be witness to a spontaneous combustion please call us at 440-564-7266 or visit  http://www.SERVPROgeaugacounty.com

Memorial Day is finally here...be sure to stay safe!

man at grill Follow along our safety tips!

Annually, U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 10,200 home fires each year involving grills, hibachis, or barbecues. With it being Memorial Day this weekend, SERVPRO of Geauga County urges homeowners to check the readiness of their outdoor cooking equipment – like grills and propane tanks – to help ensure summer cooking fires don’t become house fires.

General Grill Safety

  1. Check your grill for cleanliness and damage. Remove grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill before the first use and after each subsequent use.
  2. Position your grill well away from your home and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging tree branches
  3. Keep children and pets at a safe distance – at least three feet from the grill
  4. Never leave the grill unattended when in use, and always grill outside.

Be sure to enjoy the warm weather and grill season but stay safe as well!

Tips on Fire Prevention.

1/27/2022 (Permalink)

fire damage Recent fire damage in our customers home.

SERVPRO of Geauga County was quick to arrive on the scene of this unfortunate fire in Brunswick, Ohio earlier this week!

Thankfully everyone was ok, but it is imperative to take the time to share with everyone these useful tips on Fire Prevention:

The U.S. Fire Administration reports that cooking, followed by heating, are the top two leading causes of home fires. You can help prevent fire damage by:

  • Installing smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside bedrooms.
  • Staying in the kitchen when cooking, or by the grill when grilling.
  • Turning oven burners off and making sure the stove area is clear of other materials.
  • Keeping anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, heaters, etc.
  • Unplug or turn heaters off when you’re not in the room.
  • Have heating systems and chimneys inspected regularly.

After a Fire - Use Caution

  • While waiting for help to arrive, safety is key:  Assess whether it’s safe to stay in the house.
  • Look out for electrical and “slip and fall” hazards.
  • Only attempt activities that are safe for you to perform.
  • Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful!
  • If safe to enter, and weather permits; open windows and doors to “air out” structure and reduce smoke odors.

Fire Safety in Geauga County

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

Michael Bowdren of SERVPRO Geauga County with the Auburn Fire Department Getting educated from our first responders.

This past week was Fire Prevention Week, which is a great reminder to educate yourself and to make sure you know what to do in the unfortunate event of a fire.

First and foremost, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are a necessity.  Be sure to TEST your devices MONTHLY, CHANGE them YEARLY and REPLACE them every 10 YEARS.  It is important to know that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are two very different devices and should both be in your home.  Fire alarms detect smoke while carbon monoxide detectors detect carbon monoxide, a harmful gas that can cause health effects.  You can purchase dual detectors that pick up the presence of both smoke and carbon monoxide but having individual detectors is best and most reliable.

This week I had the opportunity to visit a few local firehouses in my community.  Thank you for all you do and if we can help bring awareness to the community including providing fire safety tips and provide educational resources, we are happy to do so!

More than 19,500 reported fires are started by fireworks every year.

Burns account for 44% of the 9,100 injuries treated in emergency rooms seen in the month around July 4th.

Half of the fireworks injuries seen at emergency rooms were extremities: hand, finger, or leg. One-third were to the eye or other parts of the head.

Children ages 10–14 had the highest rate of fireworks injury, with more than one-third (36%) of the victims of fireworks injuries under age 15.

Sparklers account for roughly one-quarter of emergency room fireworks injuries.

1,900 structure fires, 500 vehicle fires, and 17,100 outside and other fires

Fire and your Geauga Property

5/19/2021 (Permalink)

In the devastating event of a fire in home, or fire in business, there are many things that must be done for fire cleanup. Fire damage can leave extreme amounts of soot damage, air quality problems, and smoke damage. Commercial fire damage and fire loss can also be incredibly harmful to a business. Regardless of the amount of damage, it's of the utmost importance to have a professional assess the damage.

The fire damage can be damaging to one's health, especially if there is smoke damage. The air quality from the fire in the home will not only cause you harm, this as well as soot damage can be fatal to pets. Commercial fire damage can harm a business and its reputation if the fire cleanup isn't handled properly. It's not easy to explain to employees and customers that there's been a fire in the business.

The valuation of fire loss is typically handled by insurance adjusters. They will assess the estimate of fire damage and fire loss to determine an amount that will cover the fire cleanup and if your insurance policy will cover it. After the assessment is done, the homeowner should call a fire cleanup company to provide them with an estimate. The company will restore the property, so the air quality, smoke damage, and soot damage are handled by a licensed professional.

Fire loss from a fire in a home is certainly something that nobody wants to deal with. Hiring a qualified professional to take care of the matter is paramount. Not only will the job be done safely, but the restoration process should yield results as if there was never a fire in the home. While these events are never a good thing, help is available to make the process from the fire loss a little more bearable. Cigarette Fires Are Preventable!

4/29/2021 (Permalink)

Garbage Can Fire Fire caused by a cigarette thrown in a trash can the was not completely put out.

Most home fires occur in the kitchen while cooking and are the leading cause of injuries from fire. Another cause of fires at night are carelessly discarded cigarettes. These fires can be particularly dangerous because they may smolder for a long period before being discovered by sleeping residents.

Cigarette fires are preventable! The following are simple steps that each of us can take to prevent a tragedy.

Smoking

  • If you smoke, smoke outside. Most home fires caused by smoking materials start inside the home. Put your cigarettes out in a can filled with sand.
  • Make sure cigarettes and ashes are out. The cigarette really needs to be completely stubbed out in an ashtray or can with sand. Soak cigarette butts and ashes in water before throwing them away. Never toss hot cigarette butts or ashes in the trash can.
  • Check for cigarette butts. Chairs and sofas catch on fire fast and burn fast. Don't put ashtrays on them. If people have been smoking in the home, check for cigarettes under cushions.
  • Never smoke in a home where oxygen is used, even if it is turned off. Oxygen can be explosive and makes fire burn hotter and faster.
  • Be alert - don’t smoke in bed! If you are sleepy, have been drinking, or have taken medicine that makes you drowsy, put your cigarette out first.

If you have unfortunately suffered from a fire and need restoration, cleanup services, do not hesitate to contact the appropriate professionals. Have Questions? Call Us 24/7 – 440-564-7266

Fire Protection Week in Geauga County

10/6/2020 (Permalink)

National Fire Protection week this year, is October 4th through the 10th. Fire Prevention Week started as a result of the October 8th, 1871 Great Chicago Fire in which over 250 people were killed, 100,000 people were left homeless, and it destroyed more than 2000 acres of land including over 17000 building structures. The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) takes this week to educate children, adults, and teachers the importance of fire safety. This years focus is on safety in the kitchen. According to NFPA, cooking is the #1 cause of fires in a home. They found unattended cooking to be the leading cause of kitchen fires. Burns from scalding liquid are #2 of all burn injuries. NFPA has many tips on staying safe including:

1. Staying in the kitchen while you are cooking

2. Keeping anything that can catch on fire clear from the cooking area.

3. Use a timer

4. Keep handles away from the edge of a stove and countertop

5. Open Microwaved products and oven doors slowly and away from your face.

Preparing Your Family

It is essential that everyone knows what to do to prevent a fire. If you have small children or elderly family members who will require assistance, designate someone specific to do so. Involving family in the plan and practice increases their chances of safety.

No one likes to think about a fire ravaging their home. With a comprehensive education and a fire escape plan, you can teach you family how to stay safe if one should occur.

How To Clean Clothing After a Fire

5/19/2020 (Permalink)

Ozone Machine This compact machine has the power of a thunderstorm when it comes to eliminating odors!

Smoke odor after a fire could remain in clothing unless it is properly treated. Trying to deodorize with perfumes, sprays, or disinfectants, will only mask the smoke odor. The smoke odor will return once the chemical, based spray evaporates. One of the best methods to deodorize clothing is called an ozone treatment. An ozone treatment will produce an oxidizing agent that resembles the smell, that one may smell, after a thunderstorm. Using an ozone machine should be done by a professional in an ozone room / chamber. An ozone treatment should also be done prior to any laundering and or dry cleaning. SERVPRO of Geauga County provides timely response with mitigation services ranging from fire, smoke, soot and odor removal to content claims inventory and document restoration.

3 Things To Know About Maintaining a Furnace

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

Technician looking over a gas furnace with a flashlight before cleaning it Knowing how to take care of your furnace is important when handling proper maintenance of your home

If you have a furnace, maintenance is key to its longevity. This is especially important if you must deal with fire cleaning or other unexpected events in Mayfield, OH. Following these three guidelines can be useful when striving to keep your furnace in working condition.

Perform Maintenance Before Winter

Before winter sets in, have your furnace looked at. This can alert you to any problems you weren’t aware of and prevent possible fire damage from happening. Your furnace has three main parts that should be examined routinely:

  • Filter system
  • Motor
  • Blowers

With regular inspections by trained professionals, you can prevent significant, and potentially costly, problems with these vital components.

Seek Help From a Professional When Problems Arise

If your furnace has an issue, it is better to have it fixed before the winter season starts, rather than having it break down when you need it the most. Whether you need fire cleaning or smoke cleaning after a disaster or simply someone to inspect that weird humming that started last week, a fire restoration company or furnace specialist can provide an estimate and help you save time.

Replace Filters Regularly

It is easy to forget to replace your furnace filter. If you're having furnace problems, a dirty filter may be to blame. Hold it up against the light to see if it looks clogged. If it does, it is important to replace it, regardless of how long it has been there. Filters are normally replaced every three months, or sooner if you have extenuating circumstances, such as pets. A company who performs fire damage assessment can assist you with problems related to filters.

Knowing how to take care of your furnace is important when handling proper maintenance of your home. If you’ve ever dealt with fire cleaning or if you believe there are other pressing issues, a professional can check them out before winter begins. What's more, with light maintenance of your own, such as changing filters regularly, you can help your furnace last for as long as possible.

3 Things to know About Fire and Your Insurance

Fire loss in a Mayfield, OH home

3 Things to know About Fire and Your Insurance

When you live in Mayfield, OH, having renters insurance can be an important factor in maintaining your apartment. Renters coverage can be helpful in a number of ways, but one of the most common people think of is fire coverage. Here are a few things you may want to know about your policy and how it can help in the event a fire starts.

1. What Your Insurance Usually Covers

Most renters policies consider fire damage to property within the apartment as a covered peril. This means that cost of any personal items you bring into the residence damaged by a fire should be under your renters policy. Damage to the structure of the apartment may be considered the landlord’s property, and thus may be covered by their policy. Your coverage may include loss of use instead.

2. What Types of Coverage May Be Available

There are many policy types under renters insurance, and each is designed differently. For example, the term actual cost is used when referring to the value of an item while replacement cost is the cost it would take to replace that item. Most policies cover replacing damaged property. Liability coverage would apply if you were accidentally responsible for causing the fire, and loss of use may be there in the event a fire renders the apartment inhabitable.

3. What To Do if a Fire Occurs

In the event a fire does occur it’s important to contact your agent as soon as you can. This way they can begin the assessment quickly and you can contact a fire restoration service to begin any repairs. In many cases your insurance agent may even have a company they recommend to do the job.
In many cases your renters insurance can include coverage depending on where and how the fire starts. In some cases the fire may fall under the responsibility of your landlord so it’s important to know exactly what your policy contains. If a fire does occur it’s important to contact your agent, and then a restoration service in order to begin repairs as soon as you can.

Your Responsibilities as a Landlord After a Fire

6/25/2019 (Permalink)

Encourage renter´s insurance

Landlords are responsible for providing a safe, livable space for their tenants. There are several things you need to do to facilitate the restoration of your property in Gates Mills, OH if it is damaged in an apartment fire.

Open Lines of Communication

As a landlord, it is your responsibility to make sure that the damage done to the structure is fixed so that it is habitable again. It is also important to stay committed to and informed about the process so that you can pass pertinent information on to your tenants. Make sure to establish and maintain contact with the following immediately after fire damage:

  • Fire officers
  • A fire remediation company
  • Your insurance agent

The fire officer can let you know when the building is safe to enter to start repairs and may give you an idea of what repairs are needed. Restoration specialists can give you a more detailed, itemized list of tasks they must complete to mitigate the fire damage in your building and how much the full process is likely to cost. Your insurance agent can send an adjuster to document the scene and get work on your claim started so that you are able to cover the cost of repairs.

Encourage Renters' Insurance

If you have good insurance, the damage the apartment fire causes to the structure and the plumbing and electrical systems within it are likely to be covered by your policy. Your tenants' belongings, however, are not. Once disaster strikes, it's too late for them to think about protecting their personal property. When tenants sign their leases, encourage them to obtain renters' insurance. This type of policy can cover not only items damaged in a fire but also may provide the money they need to secure temporary housing while repairs are being made.
No matter how well you maintain your property, an apartment fire may still occur. By keeping up with your responsibilities and keeping tenants informed about theirs, however, you may be able to get the property restored more quickly.

3 Items That Should Be Cleaned After a Fire

Cleaning electronics after fire

Items That Should be Cleaned After a Fire

If you have experienced a fire in your Middlefield, OH, home, then you will likely have a lot of damage and fire cleanup to deal with. Even if the fire did not spread far, you might still have smoke damage in a larger area. This should be removed as soon as possible, as it can cause further damage over time. Here are a few items that should be cleaned after a fire.

1. Soft Toys and Fabrics

Anything that has a soft and porous exterior should be included in cleanup, as it can easily trap soot and odors. Curtains, furniture and clothing should all be thoroughly cleaned. If you have children, their toys should be included as well. While it may be difficult to part your little ones from their favorite stuffed animals or blankets, these should be cleaned before they are allowed to handle them again.

2. Electronics

Fire cleanup includes electronics. They might look fine on the outside, but smoke can cause extensive damage to electronics. Acids in smoke residue can corrode metal, including those found in your computers, televisions and small gadgets. Eventually, this can cause your electronics to stop working.

3. Documents, Artwork, and Photographs

For any paper items that were not destroyed in the flames, smoke damage can likely be removed during cleanup. Depending on the severity, it may not be exactly as it was before the fire, but there are several methods that a fire remediation service can use to minimize and reduce damage, such as freeze drying and dehumidification.

Because smoke damage can last long after the fire has passed, it is important to be thorough during the fire cleanup stage. Residue from smoke can spread much further, even if the fire was contained to a small area of your home. A professional service can help with both cleaning and repairs of the structure of your home as well as any belongings that have been damaged.

Preparing Your Home and Family for a Fire

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

Practice your fire escape plan

Fire safety is one of the most important things you can teach your children about your home. Having a fire escape plan involves more than just telling everyone to vacate your house in Chagrin Falls, OH, if a fire should break out. To help your plan go smoothly, you must prepare both your home and your family for the possibility of fire.

Preparing Your Home

The first line of defense against a home fire is your alert system. You should install smoke detectors throughout your home in prominent places:

  •  Inside every sleeping area
  •  Outside every sleeping area
  • In a middle common area on every level

It’s not enough to install the detectors, however. Test the detectors frequently. A sensible time to do so is when you practice your fire escape plan. This tells you if your smoke detectors are working and if they’re all connected like they’re supposed to be.

It’s also important to make sure that there are clear paths to safety. When you are devising a plan, check to see if there are two exits out of every room and that these exits are easy to use. Don’t block windows with chairs or other furniture.

Preparing Your Family

While your fire preparation plan may include contact information for a professional restoration company to make your house safe again, the main priority when a fire breaks out is the safety of the people inside. It’s essential that everyone knows what to do during a fire. Talk about how to get out and where to meet once you do. Set off the smoke detectors and have everyone walk through the process. If you have small children or elderly family members who will require assistance, designate someone specific to do so. Involving family in the plan and practice increases their chances of safety.

No one likes to think about a fire ravaging their home. With a comprehensive fire escape plan, however, you can teach you family how to stay safe if one should occur.

How To Effectively Remove Cigarette Odor From Your Home

12/19/2018 (Permalink)

Technicians in Chagrin Falls, OH can get rid of smoke odor in your home

Of all of the household odors you can encounter, cigarette smoke is one of the more pervasive and persistent. There are many reasons why you might want to rid your home in Chagrin Falls, OH, of this smell. You may be selling a home where someone uses tobacco, buying one, or entertaining visitors who smoke indoors. It may be as simple as a purchase of used furniture that brought the odor into your home. Whatever the source, you may find yourself wondering about an effective and lasting home deodorization process.

Why Ozone Can Be Beneficial

Of course, a thorough cleaning should be done first to remove nicotine and other residues, but that likely will not remove all of the odor. The best and most powerful method, once initial cleaning has taken place, is to place an ozone machine in your home. There are several reasons this is effective.

  • Ozone can penetrate any soft or porous surface.
  • It can reach even the smallest crevice.
  • The gas destroys spores, molecules, and bacteria that cause odors to form.
  • It is non-staining and leaves no residue.

When it comes to home deodorization, an ozone generator is considered the most effective way to break down the cells that hold odor-causing substances. Enough of this gaseous form of oxygen needs to be produced to adequately fill the area, pressing into cracks and crevices and penetrating fibers and fabrics.

Who Can Assist With This Specialized Treatment

Eliminating stubborn cigarette odor is best done by calling a professional service technician in Chagrin Falls, OH. The professional will be able to determine how much ozone is needed, for how long, and make sure it is handled safely. They can instruct or assist with cleanup and safety measures afterward as well.

Eradicating the smell of cigarette smoke can make all the difference when it comes to enjoying your surroundings. Using ozone in your home deodorization process may ensure that it doesn’t become a reoccurring problem.

3 Steps To Filing a Fire Claim

10/23/2018 (Permalink)

Large fire loss in a Bainbridge,OH home

There are several steps an homeowner should follow after a fire at a residential property in Bainbridge, OH. Document proof of damage, take measures toward mitigation, and pursue fire restoration as soon as possible.

Here are three key steps toward filing a fire insurance claim

1. Contact the Insurer

Notify your home insurance provider that a fire has caused damage. You may be able to request an advance to offset preliminary mitigation expenses. Inform the insurer that you will submit documentation of damage and losses to support the claim and pursue professional fire restoration and smoke cleaning.

2. Document the Damage

Make a list of contents and note the current status of every item, including those that have sustained damage or been destroyed. You should also gather as many receipts as possible. Ideally, you will provide a detailed inventory of contents with recent pictures or video footage of the property prior to the fire. Supplement these materials with photographs or videos of property damage after the fire. Avoid touching damage and put down towels or sheets to limit the amount of soot that gets ground into flooring.

3. Demonstrate Damage Mitigation

An insurance company is more likely to pay out on your claims if you take measures toward mitigation. Board up broken windows and use tarp to cover any holes in the roof. This can limit the extent of secondary damage caused by external debris or additional water damage. A mitigation and restoration company may provide these services.

Take action as soon as a fire has been extinguished to limit the amount of damage and increase the likelihood that insurance will cover your claim. You can start the process of filing a claim on your own or retain the services of a fire restoration and smoke cleaning service for documenting and mitigating damage to a residence located in Bainbridge, OH.

How to Optimize Your Building’s Fire Sprinklers

9/4/2018 (Permalink)

Fire damage in a Bainbridge, OH home

As a safety precaution, every commercial building in Bainbridge, OH, should have a fire sprinkler system. Unlike the heating, cooling and electrical systems, your building’s fire suppression unit is not routinely utilized. To keep your system in top shape, you should complete routine maintenance as well as abide by a few important recommendations.

Key Recommendations

Following the following three recommendations will help ensure your sprinklers are unobstructed and capable of performing their fire suppression duty.

  1. Evaluate Object Height
You should ensure that all objects are at least 18 inches below every sprinkler head. If objects are too close to a head when it engages, water will not distribute evenly, which can adversely affect the system’s extinguishing capacity.
  2. Remove Dirt and Grime
To properly spray water, sprinkler control valves must be able to open when necessary. Over time, dust and grime can coat the valves, especially in kitchens. To optimize your sprinkler system’s valves, you should complete a routine fire sprinkler cleanup and wipe heads with a gentle degreaser.
Because paint can also block the valves and affect the sprinkler’s performance, you should ensure that no one paints the sprinkler heads.
  3. Promptly Repair Damaged Heads
If you detect a broken sprinkler head, you should have it repaired promptly. A damaged head may not properly activate during a fire. At some point, it could also initiate accidently, resulting in unintentional water damage.

Annual Inspections
Annual inspections are crucial for detecting potential problems that could prevent your fire sprinkler system from properly engaging in the event of a fire. A trained technician should complete a thorough inspection that includes the following procedures:

  • Examining all heads, pipes and valves
  • Assessing for potential internal blockages caused by sludge or rust
  • Checking the system’s water pressure
Your technician should also check the external water intake connection caps and ensure none are broken or missing. Damaged or missing caps can allow debris into your system, resulting in a potential blockage.

A Continuous Process
Inspecting your fire sprinkler system should be a routine practice for your business. If a fire erupts, a well-maintained fire suppression unit can help smother flames, minimizing damage and the need for extensive fire cleanup and restoration.

The First Steps to Take After a Fire

5/7/2018 (Permalink)

House Fire in Charden

You have just suffered extensive fire damage to your home in Charden, OH, and while your family is safe, you may be feeling overwhelmed by everything involved in the fire restoration process. While said process may be long, there are only a few simple things you need to do to get it started.

1. Call the insurance company. Sanitizing, smoke cleaning and full restoration are likely to be expensive, but your fire insurance policy will probably cover a large portion of the cost. The first thing you want to do, therefore, is get the claims process started. The company will usually send an adjuster to assess the damage firsthand and calculate the amount of the settlement. The sooner you call your insurance company, the sooner the money for the fire restoration work may arrive.

2. Don’t touch anything. The second step may be the hardest. It may seem like a good idea to start to clean up, but without the proper chemicals and equipment, your efforts may actually make the problem worse. Common household cleaners or abrasives can ingrain stubborn soot into surfaces. Moving items before they’ve been tested can spread contamination. Your best course of action is to check into a hotel or stay at the home of a friend or family member so that you won’t be tempted to clean.

3. Call in the experts. Fire restoration specialists in Charden, OH, have the experience and supplies to conduct proper smoke cleaning services, so it makes sense to call them as soon as you are settled in your temporary home away from home. One of the first things they will do is secure your home by boarding up broken windows and covering holes in the roof with tarps. This keeps the current problem in and other potential problems out.

Fire restoration begins by securing funding, your family and your home. After you have done that, your restoration experts can guide you through the rest of the process.

Using Your Space Heater Safely

1/30/2018 (Permalink)

When the winter chill sets in, it’s only natural to want to stay warm.

However, sometimes your heating fails you, or maybe you don’t have central heating to begin with. That’s typically when the space heaters come out to keep things toasty and warm. While these appliances are certainly useful, they can be extremely dangerous to you, your family and your home if not used correctly and responsibly, leading to a burned space heater and a lot of professional smoke cleanup in the aftermath. What many people using space heaters don’t realize about them is that:

  • They cause around a third of winter house fires every year.
  • They typically contribute to around 80 percent of winter house fire deaths.
  • Insurance companies have had to pay over $48 million for space heater damages in the past five years.

Fortunately, there are plenty of precautions you can take to use your heater responsibly so you and your family can be both safe and warm this winter in Mayfield, OH.

Isolated Spaces

The leading cause of a burned space heater is that homeowners often set them up much too close to other items. According to a number of insurance websites, your heater should be at least three feet away from anything it could potentially burn at all times to reduce the likelihood of a fire occurring.

Don’t Leave It Unattended

Yes, you want your home to be warm when you get home, but is it worth risking a house fire? If you’re not able to directly supervise your space heater, it’s always best to switch it off and let it cool down before you leave.

Level Settings

When placing your space heater, ensure it’s on a level surface. This way, it’s less likely that the machine will tip over and create a hazardous condition.

By keeping children away from your heater, refraining from using extension cords, and keeping your smoke alarms in order, you can reduce the chances of experiencing a burned space heater in your home this winter.

Did You Suffer From a House Fire? What You Need to Do Next

10/25/2017 (Permalink)

Did You Suffer From a House Fire? What You Need to Do Next

Did you suffer from a fire in your home or a fire in your business? You need to call a fire damage restoration company to repair the residential fire damage or commercial fire damage. Of course, there is the fire damage itself, meaning burnt parts of your home and furniture. However, commercial fire damage also includes soaked walls, floors, ceilings, and furniture. When there is a fire in your home or a fire in your business, lots of water will be sprayed all over your home to put out the fire. This is part of the fire damage as well. In addition, the firefighters may cut holes in your walls or break your windows. This is done to make sure that the fire is completely gone from inside the walls, and also to provide ventilation. Soot damage and smoke damage, including a smoke smell, is also something you will face after a fire in your home or a fire in your business.

The fire damage restoration company should be contacted as soon as possible. The more the fire damage or commercial fire damage is allowed to go untreated, the more damage there will be. Soot damage and smoke damage get worse over time, and so does the smoke smell. The water damage gets worse too. The fire cleanup and fire damage restoration process should be started immediately.

The first thing the restoration company will do is take a tour of your home. This is necessary so that they can assess the extent of the damage. This assessment will help them plan a course of action that will best help restore your home. Don’t enter the home before the fire restoration company has a look at it, because it may not be safe to enter.

The next step in the fire cleanup process will be to board up your broken home. If there are broken windows, or if there are holes in the walls caused by the fire, you need to board up those windows or holes. The First Steps to Take After a Fire in Home

Once the damage has been done, it's critical that the next steps ensure that the rest of the process is as simple and streamlined as possible. This is the time when you should make a call to a professional fire restoration company and your insurance company. You'll also want to document the fire damage (by taking pictures) so that way you'll have all of your bases covered.

Keep in mind that you don't want to settle with just any restoration company when it comes to fixing the fire damage. Your home needs to be in good hands and that's why you're about to discover how to sort the best out from the rest.

The Fire Damage Restoration Process: Broke Down

One of the many things plaguing owners and tenants is that when there's a fire in their home or a fire in business, they think the process of repairing the smoke damage is more complex than what it really is. That's why this brief guide was written, so that there could finally be some light at the end of the tunnel.

Step 1 – Formal Inspection & Fire Damage Assessment

This is the first step that a professional restoration company will take when you give them a call about smoke damage or any other damages caused by a disaster. Keep in mind that the best companies will usually be on call and offer emergency service for a fire in home or fire in business so that relief doesn't come with a long waiting period.

Make sure that during this process, you listen closely to what the fire damage restoration company says and store it in your memory. This will help make you informed of what to expect and what's going to happen during the whole process.

Step 2 – Board Up & Tarp Off If Needed

Sometimes a fire in business or home can burn a hole in your roof or exterior wall which means that it could cause further complications that are more extensive than just soot damage or smoke damage if left unattended to. A restoration company that's credible will immediately tarp off the roof and board up the house as needed. If there's no damage to the exterior that could lead to further damage, this step could be skipped without any detrimental effects from it.

This is also where you have the opportunity to sort out the best from the rest. If a company comes in and says next week we'll tarp off the roof or complete the board up process, run! You don't want your home or business put at risk of suffering more damage than it already has. The board up needs to occur immediately, regardless of what the situation may be.

Step 3 – Water Removal & Drying

This is a very critical step where water damage has occurred. This involves removing the water with water pumps so that the drying process can begin. The reason that this is one of the top steps is that it helps prevent any further damage (including the growth of mold) from occurring prior to fixing the damages left by the original incident.

Regardless of whether you're fixing residential or commercial fire damage, the fire cleanup process in this step is relatively the same. The restoration company will come in to remove the smoke smell and soot damage that occurred during the fire. This is done by using certain chemicals and cleaning methods to ensure that the home or business returns to a sanitary state of existence. You'll also get a breath of fresh air when the smoke smell is eliminated.

Step 5 – Restoring the Home/Business Back to Normal

Once the smoke smell is gone and the fire cleanup is completed, the next stage can finally begin. This is where you can start restoring the home to a better state than it was. It's almost like returning it to how it was when it was brand new.

Fire damage restoration in this stage will consist of replacing the flooring (as needed), throwing on a fresh coat of paint, reframing if studs were damaged during the fire, and much more. The whole concept is to ensure that everything which was damaged is fixed by the time this stage reaches its level of completion.

There's only one more thing left to do!

Residential and commercial fire damage takes its toll and this is where you can finally kick back and relax in your newly restored home or business. Use Professional Fire Restoration Services to Alleviate Long Term Fire Impacts

Fire Restoration Today

Has your home or business sustained fire damage in the past? Fires vary in duration and in the amount of damage they inflict. Yet anyone who has endured a fire in home settings or a fire in business environments likely appreciates the importance of obtaining thorough, skilled fire cleanup assistance afterwards.

In addition to leaving a distinctive smoke smell permeating the premises, a conflagration may create extensive property losses from soot damage and smoke damage. In some situations, particularly in cases involving commercial fire damage, high temperatures melt building materials or flammable items stored on the property. This process may release gases and unhealthy toxic chemicals in the vicinity. The presence of water from sprinkler systems and fire hoses further complicates fire cleanup and fire damage restoration efforts in many situations. For all these reasons, environmental health experts such as the Institution of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification have urged property owners to seek professional, specialized cleaning assistance following fire damage. Two aspects of this process remain particularly important: the labor intensive nature of fire cleanup and the need to correctly clear away ash residues to prevent corrosion.

Professional Fire Cleanup: Labor Intensive

Many people find the extensive hours required to help clean away fire damage surprising. Yet even comparatively small fires sometimes result in an extensive cleanup effort. Retaining a professional cleaning service ensures fire damage restoration can proceed in a timely manner. A single household usually cannot furnish the manpower required to clear away all the traces of fire in home environments even when friends and relatives assist with this effort.

Cleaning following a fire in business venues sometimes proves even more daunting. Commercial fire damage may extend across a substantial physical area. Removing wet and soot damaged carpeting and furnishings promptly requires a significant infusion of labor. Customers will notice the lingering smoke smell clinging to upholstery fabrics and fixtures even if a fire on business premises caused smoke damage alone.

Fire Damage Restoration Eliminates Lingering Toxins

Another strong reason to retain the assistance of a specialized fire damage restoration company after a blaze relates to the potential long term impacts of ash residues. Soot damage may seem harmless: yet this material sometimes contributes to rusting and tarnishing. Over the course of time, uncleaned ash residues may help cause the corrosion of metal surfaces and the discoloration of fiberglass, plastics and even fabrics.

To completely clean and sanitize a structure after a fire, removing the consequences of soot damage and smoke damage in a timely fashion remain key objectives. Professional restoration companies with experience cleaning after fire damage help many property owners recover from commercial fire damage after a fire in business premises. These firms may also assist with preventing soot damage and smoke damage from producing permanent deterioration following fire in home settings. Their employees have typically received training in the best ways to clean and restore treasured furnishings, including furniture and fixtures. While property owners may lose some items, capable fire damage restoration specialists help mitigate these losses. They assist in dispelling the noxious smoke smell faster, too.

A Developing Field

In the future, the specialized field of cleaning and restoration services will no doubt continue to evolve. Experts today have discovered ways to reduce losses caused by residential and commercial fire damage in numerous settings (including monument restoration in nations such as Georgia in the Caucasus Mountains). This ongoing effort likely will produce enhanced restoration technologies.

By helping to eliminate the lingering smoke smell which clings to items after a fire in home environments, fire restoration specialists offer a valuable service to many households. Companies appreciate their assistance after a fire in business premise, also. The development of additional restoration technologies contributes to the emerging field of fire damage cleanup and restoration!
