Chimney Fire Prevention in Geauga County

Here are a few ways to prevent this from happening:

• Schedule an annual chimney inspection
• Never use a fireplace that has a damaged chimney liner.
• Have a chimney cap installed.
• Make sure there is not restricted air supply.
• Only burn dry, cured wood.  That means wood that has dried for 6-12 months. 
• Do not burn treated or construction wood.  It can be chemically treated and produce dangerous fumes when burned.
• Never use gasoline or kerosene
• Never overload your fireplace.
• Never leave a fire unattended, especially around children.
• Keep a fire extinguisher on hand just in case.
• Build your fire slowly.
