Your Next Steps After Commercial Storm Damage

Property owners in Geauga, Ohio know that at one time or another they’ll likely have to deal with storm damage. This usually means water damage that precipitates a significant tear out of existing structures and the subsequent storm restoration. In the event of storm damage, here are four steps to help you stay on top of things.

Extraction of Water

If a storm has left you with standing water, then that water will have to be pumped out before any repair or restoration can begin. Generally, a submersible pump can be temporarily installed in order to rid your structure of standing water. The extraction of water should begin as soon as possible to reduce the damage that’s done to the building and its contents.

Removal of Damaged Materials

Once you’ve removed the standing water, you’ll need to remove those items that are water damaged and those that are still holding water. That may just mean taking the contents of the building out, but it may mean pulling out carpet and other floor coverings in order to protect your subflooring. That tear out of wet materials will need to be completed before any repair or restoration begins.

Drying of Structure

Once everything that can be removed has been torn out, you’ll still need to allow the remainder of the building to dry out. Walls and ceilings may look dry, but they’re generally constructed of porous materials that hold water inside, even once the surface is dry. Powerful dehumidifiers can help to draw out water that can cause hidden damage if it not properly removed. The drying of the structure will need to be tested to ensure that it’s complete before you begin repairs.

Restoration

Repair to the structure can commence as soon as testing confirms that the building has dried out. You’ll want an experienced contractor to handle your restoration so that as hidden surfaces come to light through the repair process, any damaged materials will be recognized and dealt with appropriately.

Water damage from a storm doesn’t have to be a catastrophe, but it does require proper drying out, tear out, and storm restoration in order to maintain the safety and aesthetics of your building. Be sure you follow all the steps to keep your property in top condition after damage from a storm.
